Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the advantages of fishing on a six man boat?
A: There are far less people aboard compared to the regular charterboats that carry up to 30 people. On slow fishing days where the average catch is 12 salmon per boat, a six man boat would be limited, and a 24 man boat would still need to catch 36 more fish to limit. You can also more easily rent the whole boat out if you are interested in a private trip.

Q: How long do the fishing trips last?
A: Bottomfish trips are typically 6-9 hours. Salmon trips are typically 8-10 hours. Halibut trips are 10-12 hours.

Q: Do I need to bring fishing gear or bait?
A: No. Everything is provided for you by Salmon Charters as part of your charter fare. If you have your own gear, you are welcome to bring it, but most people just use our gear. If you have a problem with your gear, your fare already includes the use of our gear in the event of any problems you might have with your gear. The equipment we use is proven to work great, and we have nicer gear than the other charter services.

Q: Where do I stay when I come to Westport?
A: There are several motels in the area, but we like to recommend the vacation rentals from Westport Beach Escapes. Tell them that Salmon Charters sent you and ask about free 'late checkout' for our clients.

Q: What are the different kinds of fishing trips like and how much do they cost?
A: We have Bottomfish, Salmon, and Halibut trips. Visit our trips page for pricing information.

Q: I am new to fishing. Do I have to learn to fish before I come out on the boat?
A: Not at all. The crew will gladly show you how to fish using the best techniqus for the area and species that you are targeting.

Q: Which trip is the most fun?
A: This really varies from person to person. The votes are split fairly evenly among the different types of trips we take.

Q: What do I need to bring with me?
A: Bring something to eat for lunch. You might want to bring boots. Bring raingear if it is going to be raining.

Q: What is done with the fish after I catch them?
A: The fish are cleaned or filleted for you and put in a bag for you to take up the dock. Salmon are cleaned and iced when you catch them, providing you with the highest quality fish possible. All you have to do is show up, and we take care of the rest.

Q: I went charter fishing in California, and I had to do everything myself. Is that the way your trips are?
A: We will do everything for you. Basically all you have to do is catch them and reel them in. We can even help with that if you need it.

Q: Where do I check in once I get to Westport?
A: Your check in is right on board the boat. The Lobo is on Float 20 slip D, which is in front of Harbor Resort at the end of the road past the Islander Motel. The Angela C is located on Float 8 slip D (on the left had side). Just let the skipper know who the reservation was made under, and he will check you in at that time.

Q: Do I need a license?
A: We sell license stamps that are for 1 day of fishing. The cost is $12 and it is required for everyone age 15 and up. You can buy an Annual Saltwater License for about $25 at a sporting goods store or online at https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/. (takes about 5-7 business days)

Q: Why does the web site use yellow as the background color?
A: For years, Salmon Charters was the "Home of the yellow fleet." All of the Salmon Charters boats used to be that color.

Q: I am worried about getting seasick. Is there something I should do?
A: We recommend a good night's sleep, a light breakfast, and a good over the counter seasick medicine. Marezine seems to be the one that has the best results. Read the instructions on the box. They usually have you take one an hour before you leave the dock.
